Sandown Seafront Hotel Bounces Back After One-Star Food Hygiene Rating

A Sandown seafront hotel has bounced back after being slapped with a one-star food hygiene inspection.

Following a recent visit from the Isle of Wight Council’s environmental health team, Hotel Maria, on Culver Parade, has now been awarded a five-star ‘Very Good’ rating.

Speaking in September, the hotel vowed to improve and make changes after concerns were raised over a number of failings, which resulted in a ‘Major Improvement Necessary’ rating.

Those problems included ineffective monitoring of stock control, incomplete cleaning records and a gap in the wall above the handwashing sink which was feared may be an access point for pests.

A spokesperson for the hotel, speaking in September, said since the inspector’s report was published, bookings had been cancelled.

Work has since been completed to address the problems and staff have carried out training on food hygiene, health and safety.

The improved rating has been hailed as good news by the hotel.

In their latest report, officers found the management of food safety and hygenic food handling ‘good’ as well as ‘very good’ cleaning and condition of facilities and buildings.

Inspectors only found two issues when they re-inspected the venue, one being with paperwork and the other with clothing.

Overall, the hotel scored ten out of 80 — with the lower the score, the better the hygiene rating — ensuring a five-star food hygiene rating.
