Seaview Garage To Become Artist Studio

A car and motorbike storage space in an Isle of Wight seaside village could be demolished and replaced with an artist’s studio and newly built garage.

Mr and Mrs Rivlin, the owners of the current ‘low quality’ building in Seaview known as The Garage, have applied for planning permission to undertake demolition and building works at the Circular Road site.

The proposed development would have a ‘contemporary aesthetic’ and includes rooftop solar panels according to a Design and Access Statement submitted on behalf of the couple by the architectural design practice, The Goddard Partnership Limited.

The document says it will use high quality materials.

It also states:

“The application proposes to replace the existing low quality building with a newly built garage and personal art studio.

“The Seaview Conservation Area Appraisal identifies that many of the local buildings are in good condition and retain their original appearance.

“The garage is an exception. This proposal would reintroduce buildings of a more appropriate appearance to the site, which would be a great enhancement to the conservation area over the existing buildings.”

Highways service provider Island Roads has not lodged an objection to the application.

Its consultee comment, published by the Isle of Wight Council yesterday (Thursday), recommended one condition: there should be space on the site for a minimum of two car parking spaces and two cycle spaces in the interests of highway safety.

The Garage is located in an area with Victorian and Edwardian buildings and faces a grade II listed building, Vectis Cottage on the opposite side of Circular Road, according to the statement.

A public consultation on the proposals will close on December 13.

The outcome of the application will be decided by County Hall on January 1.
