A speedway rider had to be airlifted to hospital on the mainland after a race crash at Ryde's Smallbrook Stadium.
Last night's (Thursday) Championship meeting was abandoned after race seven was stopped following a serious accident, involving Chris Mackett from Kent, tangle with fellow competitor Tim Curnock.
Mackett was tended to by track paramedics and a doctor, before the decision was made to airlift the rider to Southampton Hospital for further assessment, following a loss of consciousness and possible rib damage.
Curnock escaped major injury, but the meeting had to halted.
Island Speedway said all thoughts are with the injured racer.
Issuing an update today (Friday), his sister, Lisa Mackett, said:
“He had sustained broken ribs and sternum and fractured vertebrae. They said he is a bit in and out of it, but they think that is just the shock as he was answering all of their questions correctly.”
