Sports Days: School's Decision To Ban Parents Says Isle Of Wight Council

It is up to each school to decide whether or not to allow parents to sports days, the Isle of Wight Council says.

It comes as 'many' headteachers, across the Island, conclude they're not welcome due to COVID concerns.

Parents tell Isle of Wight Radio they're angry at the decision made by some heads, and feel it's hypocritical given the large crowds in attendance at Euro 2020.

Current guidance from the Department for Education (DFE) says separate groups of up to 30, and multiple groups of up to 30, can go to outdoor events.

The DFE guidance states:

"Sports days can go ahead. In line with the rest of the system of controls, pupils and students must remain in their bubbles, and early years children should remain in their consistent groups as is usual for your setting.

"Sports equipment should be regularly cleaned throughout the event."

An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:

"Many headteachers are rightly concluding that given the current increase in transmission, and subject to local risk assessments, that it might be unwise to allow large gatherings of parents on the school field so have decided against allowing this.“

"The council is not aware of a collective decision by all primaries in relation to sports days, but can confirm that headteachers are very mindful that the holding of any events can add to the transmission of COVID-19.

"All schools have had the same guidance from the DfE and will therefore be drawing upon this when they make decisions. Any events that do take place will have to be risk assessed in accordance with that guidance."
