'Steps Being Taken' After Ryde School Issued With Warning Notice

Steps have already been taken to address "failings" identified during a Government inspection, Ryde School has said, as it seeks to reassure concerned parents.

The Queens Road site was issued with a warning notice after a visit in May found a number of Independent School Standards (ISI) were not being met.

It has until Monday (19) to submit an action plan to tackle concerns identified.

A spokesperson for the school told Isle of Wight Radio it takes the findings "very seriously" and has said procedures have already been updated.

The report, published by the Department for Education, questioned standards relating to the suitability of staff, supply staff, and proprietors.

A spokesperson for Ryde School said this relates to the "timeliness of procedural steps and checks regarding the recruitment of new staff."

"We obviously took and take this very seriously and as explained to parents by the Head Master at the time Mr Waldron, the School immediately implemented action points relating to this during the Summer Term to ensure we are now fully compliant in this area.

"The school reassured parents then and in an updated letter in October that we continue to be compliant and our records and procedures have been updated.

"We also ensured the report was available immediately via our website for parents to read at that time."

Among other concerns raised in the inspection include the standard of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils, as well as the welfare, health and safety of students.

A statement added:

"It related to one area highlighted for improvement within the Senior School only and relates to “some pupils do not demonstrate a strong understanding of how their own use of language can reflect and convey disrespect and discrimination.”

"The ISI has recommended that we further strengthen Senior School pupils' understanding in this area and we are doing this by building on the work the School has already carried out around EDI (equality, diversity and inclusion).

"We have already placed a renewed focus on EDI since the start of term through assemblies, the Personal Development programme and discussions with pupils, and through the focus of our new larger Pastoral Care team.  All staff at the School take very seriously the responsibility of ensuring language used by pupils is appropriate, kind and considerate of others."

The school has said it is due to have another inspection in this academic year.

The 'Progress Monitoring Report' will assess whether the school has addressed the points raised.
