You can now access Brook Beach in the West Wight via steps, rather than attempting to climb down a steep slope.
The footpath, which gives us access to the beach at Brook Chine was closed in March after coastal erosion last winter.
Last week a set of steps replaced the handrail there previously, which was deemed 'unsafe' by the Isle of Wight Council.
According to the local authority, the steps cost £1,595 (no vat).
Historically, the path was in the form of a slope - which the council considered re-creating but 'conservation concerns' meant this wasn't possible.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said:
“There has been a great deal of land movement in the location of the new steps over the past five years. Until now it was possible to re-install a simple handrail. However, the latest land movement meant that the slope was too steep and even with a handrail, was deemed unsafe.
“Historically, the path to the beach was in the form of a slope. Reforming the land to recreate a slope was considered, but this would have required some heavy-duty excavations in an already unstable area. Conservation concerns were also a consideration for such drastic work in such a natural space.
“Like many other beach access points along the Military Road, the authority has therefore installed a flights of steps to aid passage to the shore at a cost of £1,595 (no vat). This has enabled the path to be reopened.”
