A police officer has been assaulted and a teenage girl arrested following an incident in Newport this afternoon (Thursday).
Hampshire Constabulary says it received reports of a teenager with a weapon on Albany Road.
Police were called at 11.43am. They say an officer was assaulted on St James Street and sustained a head injury.
A 16 year old girl from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
She remains in custody.
Officers say a BB gun was also recovered.
A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:
'We were called at 11.43am this morning with reports of a teenager with a weapon in Albany Road, Newport.
'Officers deployed and spoke with a girl along St James Street. An officer was assaulted at this location and sustained a head injury.
'A 16-year-old girl from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and remains in custody at this time.
'A BB gun has been recovered by police.'
