The 12 Isle Of Wight Candidates Vying For Votes Today

A total of 12 candidates are set to contest the General Election across the Isle of Wight's two new Parliamentary Constituencies today (Thursday).

There are six candidates in Isle of Wight West, and six in Isle of Wight East.

This will be the first General Election since the introduction of photo ID and voters are reminded that if they do not have relevant ID such as a passport or driving license they can apply for a free ID known as a 'Voter Authority Certificate' (VAC). 

People who have moved home recently should check they are on the electoral register and that they will be able to vote. 

Isle of Wight West Constituency candidates

  • Cameron Palin - Green Party

Cameron — previously the youngest Town Councillor in the country at just 18 years old — will continue to campaign for change on the Island.

His previous efforts include the push for a new floating bridge and fighting Against the Crossways Development.

Ian advocates a ban on any foreign fishing vessels entering British waters so that the pressure on fish stocks is reduced. 

He is passionate about beach and small boat angling and a volunteer at the National Coastwatch Institution, Needles.

  • Richard Quigley - Labour

A local business owner and Landlord, Richard will push for improved and cheaper ferry services, green jobs and improved education on the Island.

Other proposals include improving local NHS and police services, while giving people the opportunity to step onto the property ladder.

  • Robert Seely - Conservative

Robert 'Bob' Seely is looking to continue his tenure as MP for the Isle of Wight, having been at the helm since 2017.

His six-point plan includes improved ferry services, investing in healthcare and increased police presence on the streets.

  • Nick Stuart - Liberal Democrats

Nick’s has cited climate change and supporting jobs for Islanders among the main areas he intends to improve if elected.

He moved to the Isle of Wight more than 20 years ago, and has called Brighstone his home for almost a decade.

Economics, immigration and agriculture are among the main issues Rachel intends to focus upon if elected.

  • Emily Brothers - Labour

Emily aims to improve funding for public services, attract investment and stimulate growth in tourism, improve living standards and tackle climate change.

The Sandown Town Councillor has previously managed public policy and charity services.

  • David Groocock - Independent 

David has outlined 11 areas which he will target if elected.

These include getting roads open, improving medical, dental and care services and helping young people to own their own homes.

Michael has outlined four priorities — Economy, NHS and Social Care, Island Equality and Environment.

One of his main goals is to 'end the sewage scandal with bathing waters free from sewage by 2030.

Vix has outlined five major areas of concern: The NHS, affordable homes, an immediate ceasefire in Israel and Gaza, protecting sea and rivers, and tackling the climate emergency.

Vix is an Island teacher, community councillor and the Green Party National Spokesperson for Education.

Sarah has a five-point plan for change if elected.

This includes freezing immigration, Zero NHS waiting lists within two years and lifting the income tax threshold.

Joe's priorities include improving community care and supporting local schools.

He is more specifically keen to tackle the issues surrounding Ventnor's Leeson Road, closed following a landslide in December.
