Emergency services were called The Grove, just off Alpine Road, just before 3.30pm to reports of a landslide behind homes.
A landslide of 30m x 20m was reported the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Two people had to be rescued from the upper floor of a building, while neighbouring properties were evacuated.
A cordon is in place in the area.
