A man from Ventnor has raised more than £3,000 for Motor Neurone Disease this year - despite his fundraising events being cancelled because of coronavirus.
Inspired by his mother-in-law, who battled the disease for two years until she died in November 2019, Pete Wheeler wanted to make a difference.
Pete - being an avid runner - decided to complete his first marathon on the Isle of Wight last October - finishing in four hours and 39 minutes.
Various fundraising events were cancelled because of coronavirus - but that didn’t stop Pete from running around the Isle of Wight at 2am to ensure he was fully prepared for the marathon.
In total, Pete has raised £3,057 and half the money will be handed over to the Isle of Wight MNDA branch on Saturday 19 December.
The remaining funds have been given to MNDA’s head office for research.
Pete told Isle of Wight Radio:
‘This disease has no cure, and to watch someone you love slowly lose the use of their voice, their muscles and personality over time is heartbreaking which is why i wanted to give something back for the people who have been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease to assist them with their daily struggles, aswell as the families who are experiencing/grieving during these stressful times need the support.’
