Volunteers Needed For Isle Of Wight Blind Society's Befriending Service

Sight for Wight

Can you spare just an hour a week to make a difference to someone's life on the Isle of Wight?

Sight for Wight or the Isle of Wight Society for the Blind is looking for volunteers to join their new over the phone befriending team.

In light of the pandemic, nearly 75% of members said they wanted an over the phone befriending service.

Speaking exclusively to Isle of Wight Radio, CEO of Sight For Wight, Lisa Hollyhead said:

“We asked our members what’s the one thing we can do to help you and resoundingly came back was telephone conversations… The older people who are less likely to have access to digital technology really just like picking up the phone and chatting with a friendly person.”

“If you are looking to do some volunteer work perhaps for your D of E or CV it is extremely rewarding. I can name so many people who started it off thinking they would have to do it for their D of E but they have carried it on and made friends while learning what it’s like for someone living with a disability.

It is hoped the service will stay in place for members of the Island’s blind society for the indefinite future.

Training involves a 30-minute zoom call with the charity’s befriending manager to understand the key points.

Recently, Tina Snow from Newport shared her experiences of the pandemic with Isle of Wight Radio, you can read the exclusive story here.
