An old anti aircraft shell found at the edge of the River Medina has been safely detonated by bomb disposal teams.
The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team disposed of the device in Cowes at around 1pm today (Friday).
It was discovered at the Isle of Wight Aggregates site, near the banks of the River Medina.
Posting on Facebook, Isle of Wight Police said:
"You may have heard a loud bang at 1pm today in the area of Cowes. You weren't hearing things.
"We've been working with our colleagues from Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit at Isle of Wight Aggregates site at the edge of the River Medina where an old anti air craft shell was discovered.
"The item has now been detonated safely. The accompanying video shows the moment of the big bang!!"
