WATCH: Near Miss As E-Scooter Skids Underneath Van

An e-Scooter rider had a narrow escape when he skidded in front of a fish and chip van on the Isle of Wight.

In dashcam footage captured by the Jolly Fryer, a Beryl e-Scooter rider fails to stop at a junction in Nettlestone.

The young rider managed to jump off as the e-scooter slides underneath the wheels of the van.

The quick-thinking driver managed to perform an emergency stop, avoiding the rider.

"...It's a "Beryl Scooter". Freely available to hire to anyone with a driving licence, even a provisional. It was dark. He was on the wrong side of the road. He clearly didn't expect other traffic to be on the roads. He appeared to be of school age. His excuse? "It just went into a skid, I wasn't going too fast". Of course. Happens all the time.

"But it gets better.  phoned 101 when home. They've logged it but aren't interested.

"I phoned the IoW Council this morning, Thursday, because according to blurb put out at the start of the scheme they were proud to be part of such a groundbreaking idea. But they apparently have no idea who, on the Island, runs them and also didn't want to know. And if you try contacting Beryl you'll be lucky to get a chatbot or a disembodied American voice telling you they can't take your call.

"So, be warned. If you are unlucky enough to be involved in an accident with one of these which causes damage to your vehicle it would appear you're on your own.

"On the one hand I'm glad I wasn't in my car, the damage would have been bad, they're very heavy. On the other hand this morning I could so easily have been waking up with the thought of having someone die under the wheels of my truck last night.

"But hey, should I care? Nobody else does...[sic]"

Wednesday 8th September. Nearly home at about 20.20 after a good day all round when this happened. It's Nettlestone, the time showing on the clip is wrong 'cos I never did get around to setting it properly but all other info showing is correct. It's a "Beryl Scooter". Freely available to hire to anyone with a driving licence, even a provisional. It was dark. He was on the wrong side of the road. He clearly didn't expect other traffic to be on the roads.
