Wet Leg Release Ur Mum With Cheeky Nod To Isle Of Wight Life

This Friday will see the release of Isle of Wight band Wet Leg's eagerly anticipated self-titled debut album.

Before all twelve tracks from ‘Wet Leg’ are revealed, the duo have shared new song "Ur Mum".

Since unleashing their first single in June last year, things have moved at lightning speed for Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers.

An American adventure has seen them them sell out every live show in minutes and perform on US television three times during a recent tour on the other side of the pond.

Earlier this year the band was named number two in BBC's Sound of 2022, also racking up 40 million global streams and nine million YouTube views.

They have been touted for stardom, most recently, by music royalty Dave Grohl, Lorde and Jack White.

“Ur Mum” opens with an insult lobbed in the direction of an ex-boyfriend: "When I think about what you've become, I feel sorry for your mum"

The song also nods at outgrowing the slow pace of life and small-town energy of the Island:

“When the lights go down on this f*cking town, I know it's time to go" and results in Rhian letting out her “longest and loudest scream” for 11 seconds.

She says of the song:

“I was pretty angry at the way things had gone in this particular dynamic. It’s just a diss song I wrote to make myself feel better. It worked.”

The video was directed by Lava La Rue who says:

“The video was about bringing the viewer into Wet Leg world — sprinkling details throughout that not only reference at least four songs from the album, but also plenty of inside jokes within the band.

"Artistically it shows where the aesthetic of American indie films like ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ fit perfectly in the scape of rural British settings.

"This concept came to me when the band took me to the Isle Of Wight for the first time — I saw the connection and it all clicked into place.”

The band have confirmed UK Irish touring plans for November 2022, which have already sold-out.

Fresh from their appearance at the BBC 6 Music Festival this weekend, they’ve been announced for the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekender in May and are also as the only addition to the Radio 1 Brit List.
