Could Iconic Isle Of Wight Landmark Gain Seaside Heritage Status?

It’s been a favourite for generations, and now an iconic Isle of Wight landmark could soon be joining the ranks of Blackpool Tower and Saltburn Cliff Tramway if successful in a national vote.

The famous Ventnor Paddling Pool is a favourite with locals and visitors alike, a welcome dip of the feet in the shallow waters while walking around a miniature version of the Isle of Wight is a holiday must for many.

Now it is one of 20 seaside experiences vying for the title of the Seaside Heritage Network Bucket and Spade List 2024 – and there are just a few weeks left to vote!

The inaugural Seaside Heritage Network Bucket and Spade List crowned 10 winners, including Blackpool Tower, donkey rides at Weymouth , Papa’s Fish & Chips at Cleethorpes, with the Saltburn Cliff Tramway at Saltburn-by-the-Sea crowned overall winner.

It is now down to a public vote for the 2024 list, which sees Ventnor Paddling Pool fighting it out with heavy hitters such as Blackpool rock and the Grand Hotel at Scarborough, alongside the Punch and Judy booth at Swanage and saucy seaside postcards.

Voting closes on 31 August.

The Seaside Heritage Network says of Ventnor Paddling Pool:

“In the middle of the bright blue pool is an island, shaped like the Isle of Wight, complete with roads and hilly contours.

"Take a look from the cliffside above and you’ll see the island in the pool is orientated in the same way as the real thing. Is this the smallest island on the UK’s largest island?”

Visit Isle of Wight is urging people to vote for Ventnor Paddling Pool and help this much-loved location at the heart of Ventnor Bay become the overall winner of the Seaside Heritage Network’s Buck and Spade List 2024.

Will Myles, MD at Visit Isle of Wight, said:

"There are just a few weeks left to vote and it would be fantastic to see the Ventnor Paddling Pool claim the Bucket and Spade List crown.

"I hope all Islanders will get behind this campaign – let’s bring this award to where it rightly belongs – the Isle of Wight!"
