Woman In Hospital After Being Hit By Bus In Newport

Newport town centre was cordoned off following an incident which an elderly woman run over by a bus this afternoon (Monday).

Police were called at around 2.20pm following the incident near to St James’ Square.

The ambulance service took the woman to St Mary's Hospital for treatment.

Cordons were lifted around an hour-and-a-half after first being put in place, with the road reopened shortly before 4pm.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said:

"We were called at 2.22pm on Monday, 9 December to a report of a collision between a bus and a pedestrian in St James Square, Newport.

"The pedestrian, a woman in her 70s, suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital for treatment."

Investigations are ongoing.
