World's Toughest Row: Week One Update From Mermaid Atlantic

The Mermaid Atlantic Team are a week into their 3,000 mile rowing race across the Atlantic and have already overcome a number of challenges in the first few days.

However, the team - made up of Isle of Wight natives Xavier Baker, Chris Manion and Paul Barry remain in high spirits as they embrace all the ocean throws at the.

Xavier is founder of the Isle of Wight Distillery, Chris is owner of i-surf and Paul is a Ventnor longshoreman and firefighter.

They are settling into a routine, however, due to the rough conditions, they are unable to use the auto helm meaning there isn’t much let-up.

One person is rowing, one steering and one sleeping, as they battle the elements with little chance to rest.

They remain hopeful that as the weather eases they will be able to get back to using the auto helm, which will mean two crew rowing while the other gets a well-earned breather.

The good news is they have managed to beat off seasickness which other teams are struggling with.

Nights are very dark with no moon to guide them but they are becoming masters at navigating with the stars that make an appearance at night.

They are enjoying the stunning sunsets and have seen dolphins jumping in the distance.

The team are rowing the 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic in their Rannoch 45 boat named Mermaid Atlantic after Mermaid Gin distilled by Xavier Baker and his team at the Isle of Wight Distillery which is the main sponsor.

They are taking part in the World’s Toughest Row to raise awareness of ocean pollution, raising funds for three organisations, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, Surfers Against Sewage and The Seahorse Trust.

You can track their progress on the official race app, YB races, which you can download or view it on a desktop or TV via their website.
