Cowes Sports face a long trip to Somerset on Wednesday evening (24) after just failing to secure victory over Larkhall Athletic in the FA Cup qualifying round at Westwood Park on Saturday.
Despite being urged on by a crowd of more than 150, the Yachtsmen were denied by a late equaliser after being reduced to just nine men, following red cards for both Harrison Catania and 'keeper, Ed Hatt. Catania was sent off just before half time, but the Island side held on to the lead he had given them early on, until the 86th minute when Hatt was dismissed, and Bath-based Larkhall snatched the equaliser.
It was a bitter blow for the Wessex League, Premier Division side, who were slight underdogs as they took on a Southern League club. Now they will have to try to go one better in Wednesday’s replay.
Manager, Max Draper, reflected:
“Considering the circumstances, it’s a massive disappointment that we conceded a late goal with only nine men yet again! We need to sort out our discipline, which we talked about after the game. At the moment, we are our worst enemies. This was a game we should have got over the line, but we cost ourselves late on.”
The replay kicks off at 7.45pm.
Newport Go Down Fighting
Unfortunately, there is no second chance for Newport in the FA Cup, as they lost their qualifying round tie at Stoneham, despite a valiant effort.
The Island side knew it would be a difficult task to break down one of the best sides in the Wessex League, Premier Division, and finally had to concede a 2-0 defeat. After an even opening half-hour, in which both teams hit the woodwork, and Jordan Browne tested the home keeper with a fierce shot, Stoneham took the lead from the penalty spot.
Despite the setback, the Island side continued to battle bravely, with Joe Jordan going close to an equaliser. But Stoneham began to show their class, and after again hitting a post, they doubled their advantage in the 83rd minute to progress to the next round of the competition.
Port face another tricky trip to the mainland tomorrow evening (Tues) when they take on Petersfield Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup first round (Kick off 7.30 pm).
Vics Beaten By Odd Goal In Five
East Cowes Vics were in Wessex League Division One action, going down 3-2 at Ringwood Town. They suffered a further setback when Harrison Berry was sent off for two yellow card offences. Ringwood took an early lead which was cancelled out by Toby Snow, but the mainland side regained their advantage, and then scored a third before Coner Lyon weighed in with a second for Vics. But the Island teams’ chances of snatching a point were virtually ended after Berry was dismissed.
Vics will be hoping to make up for the defeat tomorrow evening when they travel to Tadley Calleva for the first round of the Hampshire Senior Cup (8.15pm kick off).
