The return of Gavin and Stacey for a final episode has been on fans' wish lists since the Christmas special in 2019 left us with one of the biggest cliff hangers in the show’s history, and this year we've got our wish. So, what exactly do we want to see when Gavin, Stacey, and the gang finally return to our screens for one last hurrah this Christmas? With filming commencing in Barry Island from last week, here are five things we’d love to see happen:

1. The Truth About Nessa and Smithy
The Christmas special ended with Nessa dropping a bombshell: she got down on one knee and proposed to Smithy. This twist left fans gasping, with more questions than answers. Are they meant to be together, or was it a spur-of-the-moment decision? Nessa's character is unpredictable, and Smithy is more complicated than he seems. Their love story has always been unconventional, and their relationship dynamic is unique, to say the least. In the finale, we need to see them make a decision about their future – whether that’s together or apart. Are they going to commit to being a family for the sake of their son, Neil, or is their relationship destined to remain platonic?
2. Resolution for Bryn and Jason’s Mysterious Fishing Trip
The infamous fishing trip between Bryn and his nephew Jason has been one of the most enduring mysteries of Gavin and Stacey. For years, fans have speculated about what really happened during that fateful weekend, and the show’s characters have danced around the topic with cryptic comments and awkward silences. After all this time, it’s high time the show finally puts this mystery to rest. Whether it’s a simple explanation or a reveal that adds a new layer of hilarity and surprise, we want to know the truth about Bryn and Jason’s secretive trip – and hopefully have a good laugh in the process.
3. A Career Update for Gavin and Stacey
While much of the focus of Gavin and Stacey has been on relationships and family life, both Gavin and Stacey’s careers have played significant roles in the series. Gavin’s job in Essex brought him into contact with Stacey in the first place, while Stacey’s struggle to find stable employment has been a recurring theme. In the finale, we’d love to see a satisfying update on where they both stand professionally. Has Gavin finally found a job that excites him after years of feeling stuck? Has Stacey discovered a new passion or career path that aligns with her dreams? Seeing them both thriving, or at least moving toward new opportunities, would be a great way to reflect their growth over the years and show how they’re building their future together.
4. A Happy Ending for Gwen and Bryn
Gwen and Bryn have been the emotional core of the show in many ways. Gwen, Stacey’s doting mother, has been through her fair share of ups and downs, while Bryn, the lovable uncle with a heart of gold, has always been there to support his family. Both of these characters deserve a happy ending, whether it’s finding love, achieving a personal goal, or simply getting a little more appreciation from those around them. We’d love to see Gwen finally meet someone who treats her as wonderfully as she deserves or Bryn finding a passion that gives him the confidence he sometimes seems to lack. After all the kindness they’ve shown others, it’s time for them to get some back.
5. A Big, Joyous Reunion of the Whole Cast
The heart and soul of Gavin and Stacey have always been the dynamic between the two families – the Wests and the Shipmans – and their quirky circle of friends. For the finale, we want to see everyone come together for one last big event, whether it’s a wedding, a family celebration, or even a chaotic holiday gathering. The magic of the show comes from its ensemble cast, and seeing everyone – from Gavin and Stacey to the inimitable Pam, Mick, and the whole lot – in the same room, bouncing off each other with that classic Welsh-English humour, would be the perfect way to close out the series. A heart-warming, hilarious gathering would be the ultimate tribute to the series’ charm and spirit.
