Isle of Wight Search and Rescue is this year's chosen charity for the Isle of Wight Book Awards.

Each year at the awards prize-giving lunch, a different charity is invited to be the beneficiary of funds raised.

Isle of Wight Search and Rescue is a voluntary charity that works to assist Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and other agencies in searches for vulnerable missing persons on the Island.

At the beginning of the lunchtime event, unit secretary Jenny Johnston gave an inspiring presentation about the work done and equipment used by the organisation.

The assembled authors and guests then had a chance to purchase raffle tickets for a selection of prizes donated by local businesses.

Money was also raised from the sale of the judges' copies of books submitted for entry. A grand total of £630 was raised.

Dean Terrett, founder and chairman of WightSAR, said:

“We are delighted to receive this generous donation from the Isle of Wight Book Awards.

"We are a small local charity, and donations such as this make a massive difference to our organisation, we will be sure to put this money to good use.

"We would like to thank everyone who generously donated and to the team behind the book awards for choosing to support supporting WightSAR”.

Paul Armfield of Medina Bookshop, who organises the Book Awards, said:

"Jennifer gave such an inspiring presentation, I think everyone in the room was completely impressed to see the work they do and just how skilled and dedicated their team are, they really are unsung heroes, fully deserving of the money raised."
