An Isle of Wight fossil hunter is being hailed after assisting in the rescue of a scared badger that had been the victim of a cliff fall.

Glenn Martin was hunting for petrified remains between Whale Chine and Atherfield Point on Friday afternoon (January 10), before stumbling upon a badger and rabbits affected by the crumbling rocks.

Glenn explains:

"As I approached the fall (to assist the animals) the badger, dazed and terrified, climbed up in an attempt to find a safe place.

"More of the cliff then collapsed, narrowly missing the poor animal, while the rabbits were nowhere to be seen at this point.

"I returned the following day with food and water for the badger, which had now climbed to a very dangerous spot so I left the food as close as I could and left because the area was still unstable with big spring tides.

"On Sunday I called Graham at Badger Trust  Isle of Wight for his assistance, and he (swiftly) arrived with a cage. After carefully catching him we carried him about a mile across the beach."

Badger Trust IW subsequently posted on social media, saying:

"Probably the hardest badger rescue that we have done, it was physically exhausting!

"This badger had been in a recent cliff fall and was basically stuck, had to call upon Badger Action Group for assistance in getting the badger back up the Chine in the cage.

"Thanks to keen fossil hunter Glenn Martin for spotting the badger and calling it in and helping to carry the cage along the beach."

The badger is now recovering at The Carisbrooke Vets while awaiting release.
