Shaping Newport partners are celebrating the resounding success of Newport Heritage Day held on Saturday (September 7).

This special event brought the town’s vibrant history to life, engaging both residents and visitors in a series of educational and entertaining
activities.

Newport Heritage Day saw the town bustling with excitement and activity.

Over 500 classic cars lined the Quay, complementing the historic theme of the day, while Newport Minster alone welcomed 600 visitors.

Free entry to museums, engaging tours, informative workshops, and dynamic displays transformed the town into a hub of historical celebration.

Additionally, the community consultation at 64 High Street provided a platform for meaningful exchanges about how NCCC responds to residents’ priorities.

Highlights of the day included presentations by the Isle of Wight Council Archaeology team and Finds Liaison Officer, Gary from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in The Minster.

The Isle of Wight Family History Society and the Unity Hall archive also offered captivating insights into local genealogy and history.

Edward Nash from Time Jump Histories brought a corner of Flanders to The Minster.

Family activities, guided tours at Newport Minster, and various interactive creative sessions with artist Trudie Wilson ensured that there was something to pique everyone's interest.

Local shops contributed to the historic atmosphere with displays featuring relics and stories of past occupants, like Green Shield Stamps, Lennard’s boots and shoes, saddlers and local newspaper offices, sparking lively discussions.

“The overwhelming participation and feedback from the community have been incredibly positive,” said a spokesperson for Shaping Newport

“This day not only celebrated our rich history but also brought together the community in a way that truly showed the spirit of Newport.”

Shaping Newport partners include:

Newport Business Association, Isle of Wight Council, Newport Minster, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council, the Classic Car Show, and Newport 1st Scouts.

The town is now gearing up to host the Isle of Wight Jazz weekend 18-22 September offering free and ticketed events across the town.
