Orchard House Resident James Celebrates 101st Birthday

A resident of a Newport care home has celebrated his 101st birthday this week.

Born in Northwood in 1922, James Norman Puddy is one of ten siblings and has led a life rich in diverse experiences.

James developed a deep love for the countryside, finding joy in roaming the fields near his childhood home.

His professional journey commenced at Groves & Gutterridge, Boat Builders of East Cowes, where he dedicated himself through the challenging war years.

Subsequently, James briefly contributed his skills to Ronson's Shower Factory before joining Plessy in Cowes.

It was at the shipyard where James crossed paths with Peggy, and their shared journey unfolded into marriage, blessing them with two daughters.

The family initially resided in Cowes, later relocating to Newport in the early 1950s.

In his leisure hours, James found solace in playing tennis weekly and nurturing his garden, cultivating vibrant sweet peas and runner beans.

A passionate cyclist, he explored the entire Island on his trusty old bike.

Upon retirement, James and Peggy embarked on a new chapter, settling in East Cowes and creating countless cherished memories in their bungalow.

Today, as James reaches the remarkable milestone of 101 years, his life stands as a testament to resilience, love, and the simple joys found in family, nature, and shared passions.
