Ryde Beach Lifeguards Sea Safe Drowning Prevention Programme

Ryde Beach Lifeguards delivered their drowning prevention programme in Sandown this month, with their last session this Wednesday (12 June).

The programme is sponsored by Southern Water and supported by Sandown Town Council.

Sea Safe is delivered by the Beach Lifeguards, and is an educational and immersive program that acts as a drowning prevention measure by RBLG.

The school groups learn about the dangers associated with the beach, such a rip currents, cold water shock and sun safety.

The students also learn about the lifeguard flags, how to summon help and finally survival skills in the sea.

The program was delivered to the following schools: The Bay, St Blassuis, Ryde School, Dover Park, Oakfield, Broadlea, St Marys, Queensgate, St Marys, Nettlestone, St Francis and Bembridge Primary Schools.

Todd Miller, Beach Manager, said:

“It was a great joy for our team to deliver the program to so many local schools again this year, in readiness for the summer season.

"It is a vital part of our service, and we hope that in sharing our knowledge with local school pupils, it will ensure local drownings are prevented, enabling us all to enjoy our beautiful beaches safely this summer.

"A huge thank you to Southern Water and Sandown Town Council for their invaluable support in enabling us to deliver Sea Safe for yet another year.”
