The shortlist for the 2024 Community Radio Awards has been revealed.

Newport-based Vectis Radio has been nominated for the fourth year running in the prestigious Station of the Year category.

The awards take place in Cardiff on 16 November, and Martin Steers, awards Chair, said:

“After all these years its great to see the quality of entries continue to rise, and also see a good number of stations enter, including new stations to the awards this year.

"All those shortlisted should be proud of what they do for their Station and their communities and we wish all the finalists good luck and we look forward to welcoming them to Cardiff in November.”

There were 5 more nominations, two of these are in the Community Impact Project of The Year category, for the Vectis Radio 4Ps radio training school on its 10th Anniversary and one for The Inclusivity Project.

Another nomination, in the Live Event or Outside Broadcast of the Year category, was for the station's live coverage of Isle of Wight Day 2023.

Plus a further nomination, new for Vectis Radio, in the 2024 General Election Coverage category for the entry “General Election History for the Isle of Wight.”

Finally, volunteer team member Ron Leleux has been nominated for Sage Person of the year.

Ron said:

"I am honoured to be nominated for the sage person of the year. I love helping other people learn how to present their own shows and encourage them.

"To be honest, I just popped into Vectis Radio a few years ago on an open day, and have never looked back!"

Station Manager Ian Mac said:

“Firstly Ron's nomination is so well deserved, I am blown away by the Station of the year nomination and the 4ps Radio training school to be nominated yet again is amazing and means that we must be getting something right.

"Building confidence and communication skills in young people using the using the main ingredients of radio.

"Also, massive thanks to the Isle of Wight Council, The Island Foundation, The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Fund, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Freemasons and Southwest Railway for supporting us with the funds so that we can make a huge difference to young people in our community.

"Being nominated in the Station of the year category for the fourth year running is something that we are very proud of.”

Vectis Radio Director, Kieren Thomson said of the nominations:

“We never assume to be nominated for any award, so it’s always a pleasant surprise to have nominations at the Community Radio Awards, let alone six this year.

"It is a tribute to the hard work by those who selflessly commit so much of their free time for their island’s community radio station.” Kieren's fellow director."

Kelvin Currie added:

"To be have six nominations for Vectis Radio given our relatively small team, and in such a strongly contested field is an honour in itself.

"Good luck to all those stations & individuals nominated this year."
