'Eggstremely Exciting!' - Amazon World Welcomes Great Flamingo Chick

Amazon World is celebrating the 'eggstremely exciting' hatching of its first parent-reared Great Flamingo Chick.

The zoo also welcomed one back in 2017, but on that occasion keepers had to step in after the adults abandoned their egg during the incubation period.

This time around though, the parents did most of the work.

After the female laid the egg on May 25, keepers became concerned the pair might abandon it. They decided to switch the egg with a dummy, and put the real egg in an incubator to protect it.

Amazon World says the pair sat on the dummy egg for the whole 27 days and when the real one started to hatch, it was swapped back over.

The zoo said:

"Keepers have watched the chick closely and both parents are doing a super job looking after it, taking it in turns to feed it and keep it warm and also encourage it to start to walk around its nest area.

"Work was due to start on our new South American Wader Avairy back in March, transforming our old penguin enclosure to a new home for our Flamingos and other water birds, however this sadly has been put on hold due to our recent closure.

Funding for this project has been used to help keep the zoo going during our closure so we are unsure when work will be able to start on this exciting new project but we will as soon as we can."

As Isle of Wight previously reported, Islanders are being asked to support Amazon World through the coronavirus crisis.

A crowdfunder has also been launched, with donations welcome.
